Summary

Wilde’s only novel， first published in 1890， is a brilliantly designed puzzle， intended to tease conventional minds with its exploration of the myriad interrelationships between art， life and consequence。 From its provocative Preface， challenging the reader to belief in ‘art for art’s sake’， to its sensational conclusion， the story self-consciously experiments with the notion of sin as an element of design。 Yet Wilde himself underestimated the consequences of his experiment， and its capacity to outrage the Victorian establishment。 Its words returned to haunt him in his court appearances in 1895， and he later recalled the ‘note of doom’ which runs like ‘a purple thread’ through its carefully crafted prose。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it， click here。 Wow。 That was a great experience and， although it felt infinite while being only 243 pages， I’m really happy I read it。 I’m content with the ending and I think it would have been the only good ending for me， it was also done in a very intriguing way。After Dorian killed Basil I began to strongly dislike him， but still feared for his death ; I was relieved that the sailor man was the one who got shot。 This is one of the books I’ll definitely reread when i’m older and look back at what I used to ag Wow。 That was a great experience and， although it felt infinite while being only 243 pages， I’m really happy I read it。 I’m content with the ending and I think it would have been the only good ending for me， it was also done in a very intriguing way。After Dorian killed Basil I began to strongly dislike him， but still feared for his death ; I was relieved that the sailor man was the one who got shot。 This is one of the books I’ll definitely reread when i’m older and look back at what I used to agree with。I’m excited to watch the movie now I hope it’s alright 。。。more

LOVED IT SO MUCH。 A story of art and sin。 Wilde really decided to one day just create the cruel most chattery characters and have us journey into the psychology of their philosophies。 As I continued reading， it gets darker。 The moment Sybil Vane had died and Lord Henry gave the most atrocious piece of advice， things started plummeting down。 And hands-down to Wilde for making Dorian's character very human。 In a sense that the sins he had committed made him feel all kinds of emotions: terror， joy， LOVED IT SO MUCH。 A story of art and sin。 Wilde really decided to one day just create the cruel most chattery characters and have us journey into the psychology of their philosophies。 As I continued reading， it gets darker。 The moment Sybil Vane had died and Lord Henry gave the most atrocious piece of advice， things started plummeting down。 And hands-down to Wilde for making Dorian's character very human。 In a sense that the sins he had committed made him feel all kinds of emotions: terror， joy， guilt， safety， and confusion。 Moments where his evilness would triumph over tragedies really marked me。 And moments where he debated on his actions made me feel nostalgic for what he what once was before he had met Lord Henry。Wilde exposes Hedonism's selfish ideal。 The price to pay for pleasuring individual senses putting aside moral judgement。 Dorian had become what Lord Henry believed in; to be a spectator of your life。 The tragedies he had caused are mere experiences he must moved on from。 And I can never ignore the rich immaculate writing of Oscar Wilde。 A pleasure to read in a not so pleasurable story。 。。。more

The picture of Dorian Gray explores the lavish lifestyle of a youthful spirit in the late 19th century。 Dorian is the epitome of beauty and vigour， captivating anyone who meets his gaze。 His mere presence is enchanting， which is soon uncovered by the artist Basil Hallward upon painting Dorian’s portrait。 The portrait absorbs any corruption which would be bestowed on Dorian; including that of ageing and sin。 The portrait becomes a visual representation of the purity of his soul and this is put to The picture of Dorian Gray explores the lavish lifestyle of a youthful spirit in the late 19th century。 Dorian is the epitome of beauty and vigour， captivating anyone who meets his gaze。 His mere presence is enchanting， which is soon uncovered by the artist Basil Hallward upon painting Dorian’s portrait。 The portrait absorbs any corruption which would be bestowed on Dorian; including that of ageing and sin。 The portrait becomes a visual representation of the purity of his soul and this is put to the test when Lord Henry begins to poison Dorian’s impressionable young mind with his own malignant opinions; setting Dorian on a dark path he will tread for many years to come。Now there are a couple of issues I take with this novel。 Firstly the writing style employed by Wilde is sophisticated to the point of confusion。 This is no more apparent than any time that Lord Henry speaks。 I appreciate that the intention of Wilde may have been to produce such an insufferable character， that the corruption he bestows upon Dorian is believable， but there comes a point when as a reader if I don’t understand the nonsense he is spouting how can Dorian？ Now I appreciate that my comprehension may be subpar， but as this is not an objective review， I cannot simply overlook this。 Continuing， the fact that the mere influence of one man is enough to corrupt Dorian to unspeakable sin is laughable。 Understandably when Dorian meets Lord Henry he is a mere boy; impressionable and inexperienced。 But it is like he has no opinions and no innate moral compass。 All the nonsense Lord Henry spouts is gospel to Dorian， and it， therefore， becomes Dorian’s opinions/personality; leaving him ultimately as a caricature of a character。 Speaking of characters， aside from four or five， they are all simply upper class and uninspired。 There are too many to keep track of and most are only ever mentioned once in passing。On a positive note， the idea of a portrait that enables one to extend the youthful extravagance of their 20’s is ingenious。 Furthermore， I enjoyed the gothic period in which Dorian lived and I feel that it perfectly accompanied his ruination。 Overall， however， this leads to an ultimately mediocre but interesting narrative， which I must admit， kept me reading until the very end。 This book has had some sort of influence since its initial publication in 1890， but （possibly through my ignorance） I simply fail to understand it。 。。。more

i just finished reading it and oh my god。 even though it takes forever to actually get in the plot， it had a very interesting story and i really enjoyed it。
